Pete's Auto Service Suggestions for your car this autumn.
Leaves falling from trees can accumulate in your windshield
housing drain gutters of your car. The windshield drain chamber
is the tray-like area under the hood, just below the wind
shield wipers.
Leaves can block up the drains and ultimately disintegrate
into dirt. This dirt can get into areas that should be protected,
such as the computers that control the engine, braking systems
and other expensive electronic equipment.
Especially in the fall it's important to clear out the leaves
and any accumulated grime in these chambers and also if any
leaves slide into the window areas. Leaves in the window areas
can trap water which make the windows constantly mist up,
impairing visibility and reducing safety.
Autumn can also take its toll on car batteries as the first
frost arrives. Some basic maintenance can help to prolong
battery life. Check the battery - the top of a battery must
be clean and dry, the terminals must be tight and free from
corrosion and the battery itself must be mounted securely
in its tray.
Colder winter temperatures on the way can be demanding on
your vehicle's mechanical systems. While, at the same time,
harsh winter driving conditions demand optimal performance.
These are the items that will be checked in the Autumn before
Winter arrives:
Check all fluid levels
Check the condition and strength of the antifreeze and stock
up
Check the wiper blades and make sure the fluid reservoir
is filled
Check the tread and air pressure of the tires
Check the condition of the belts and hoses
Check that the heater and defroster are in working condition
for the frosty mornings ahead.
Check that the lights and horn are in working condition

Fall is a good time to check or replenish your emergency
supplies in the car. Check the gloves, boots, blankets, flashlight,
a small shovel, sand or kitty litter, tire chains, and a cell
phone. Put a few "high-energy" snacks in your glove box.
